Since the 1970's there has been a steady flow of research data on the effects and benefits of meditation. The results overwhelmingly show there are numerous benefits to meditation. In this article we are going to concentrate on the physiological and health benefits. Nearly all forms of meditation have one thing in common, that is relaxing the body. When the body relaxes, the mind follows. Directly experiencing the inter-relationship of the body and mind, is then a significant benefit of meditation. This awareness is a doorway to increasing self awareness and self empowerment. The relationship between body and mind is a parallel direction of scientific and medical study. That they do effect each...
Researchers from some of the country's most prestigious medical centers have found in their studies that meditation can impact the thickness of the cortical tissue in the brain. This type of change is significant in the way the tissue is then able to process sensory, cognitive, and emotional responses. The group of researchers from Harvard, Yale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Massachusetts General Hospital studied 20 people each one with significant commonality. They were all extensively trained in the Buddhist Insight meditation practices. This generally meant that the subjects spent about 40 minutes each day in deep meditation. This was enough to affect grey matter in the brain...

In this article we are going to take a quick look at the idea of cosmic mediation and decide whether or not this form of "new age" mediation meets YOUR specific contemplation goals. Ready? Great! Read on for more..:-) At the heart of the cosmic meditation practice is the simple yet powerful unified or "group mind" idea of attaining transcendence through the collective, rather than individual effort of the one. Much of what eastern meditative philosophy speaks of is the idea of "no self", or the notion that we are all, at our core, part of one larger interconnected web of life. Some permutations believe the idea of a separate self is completely false altogether, i.e. - you and I are not distinct...

New Age Meditation has grown out of the New Age movement so popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Although it has waned in influence since then, it remains popular with many in the United States and Europe. New Age Meditation has a specifically American character and appeal. But its practices actually developed over the course of many centuries on the other side of the world. It offers elements that are at once exotic and familiar. New Age Meditation is a mixture of Eastern Philosophy and some very modern, innovative ideas. Forms of New Age...

The benefits of guided meditation were brought home to me very powerfully the other day. I was working on some technical stuff for my website and things were NOT going well. I was becoming very stressed out. Following the law of attraction perfectly my mind threw up a whole number of other things for me to think about that would bring me more stress. Very soon, I was in quite a state of panic, imagining all sorts of dreadful things happening in my future if things went along in some highly negative illusory way. I knew I needed to raise my vibration, but I was not doing very well with trying to access better feeling thoughts. So, I put everything down, put on a guided meditation CD called The Daily...

As a meditation guide and coach, I've heard this line many times, "I just want to relax." Many people are frustrated because when they try to learn how to meditate to relax, the group or meditation leader eventually tries to indoctrinate with his or her personal spiritual beliefs. It can be a frustrating experience for someone who has started to make progress with his or her meditation practice to have the person who leads the group turn it into a quasi-religious experience. For that reason, even though meditation is part of my own spiritual experience, I always ask my students what they want. It seems so simple and makes sense when you think about it. It is so hard to give someone what they don't...

Spinal Alignment During Meditation
Much attention should be paid to spinal alignment, at the beginning, and during, your meditation sessions. In some Yoga classes, you may be instructed to sit in Padmasana (lotus posture). As you will learn, this is not entirely correct for every student, but the reasons for choosing Padmasana are logical. With the legs crossed, they serve as a strong base, which keep the spine straight, so that energy will flow throughout the body; especially up and down the spine. Yet, this posture is not good for everyone because of the stress put on the knees. In some cases, forcing students to sit in the lotus posture will stress the ligaments within the knee joint. In the case of knees that do not conform to...

How I Learned Transcendental Meditation
It was the year of the Partridge Family, eight cent postage stamps and blue jeans with bell bottoms. That was 1971 and I was an under achieving senior in a middle American High School when I saw a funny looking poster on the way to my American History class. It had a large black and white picture of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on it and a lecture on Transcendental Meditation® was announced for the next day in the school auditorium. I was intrigued and showed up to check it out. The speaker was a young man in a suit who spoke serenely of the silence deep within us and of the simple mental technique by which we could experience it and enjoy its benefits in our day to day life. I was very impressed with his...

Secrets of Meditation, Part 2: Letting Go
Most people who avoid meditation do so because they think it is too hard. Too tedious. Too boring. Sitting silently, doing nothing, watching the grass grow by itself? Forget it. Let's watch TV! Let us meditate on something important, like "American Idol." The first problem is one of definition. The English language says that meditation means to think about something, to meditation "on" a subject; to reflect; to contemplate. To get at the real meaning of meditation, we have to look at the word Zen, which is derived from Japanese and Chinese roots and means emptying your mind of all thinking. So from the get-go, the idea that thinking about things is meditation is going off in the opposite...
What Meditation is Not - Lesson #8 (People Use...
Increasing awareness and insight into reality is our purpose, not getting high. Does the meditator sometimes experience a euphoric feeling when meditating? Yes, but not always and again, not our goal in meditating. If one goes into meditation for the purpose of obtaining a "high", he or she will actually probably have a lot of trouble experiencing that. When the sincere goal of insight meditation is kept in mind many times feelings of well being and euphoria occur. When they do, we must not focus on that however. They are just a by product to the path of insight and liberation. If we get lost in "good feelings" when our relaxation point turns blissful, we could easily take the wrong turn on our path...
